Taking A Brass Chandelier From Ugly To Lovely
Only in the US have I seen the golden brass armed chandelier as a standard light fixture in almost all newer homes. (I think (or hope!) that the trend is almost gone). I am a pretty upbeat gal who likes most things but I can’t think of a more hideous chandelier. It is mass produced, yellow brassy and totally charmless! I’d rather have an unique light bulb on a pretty cord than this. (Even when we rented homes years ago, I took them down!)
And for those of you who still have one and don’t know what to do with it — I would normally have said let Salvation Army pick it up. Until… I recently saw this project and now I almost wish I had kept one of my old ones! Haha! Did I really just say that?!
Talented Victoria took this ugly duck (you can’t even see the details because of all that glaring brass):
And turned it into this — with the help of some primer (I suspect) and matte purple paint. I have seen makeovers like this before with white and black and even red paint but purple is a first for me. Didn’t it turn out great! It cost her only $10, people! And now all the details really pop.
I will forgive you for keeping your mass produced brass chandelier only if you turn it into something more unique!

Great transformation! To be honest I´m not a big fan of purple but I like it a lot more colored than the original golden look:)!

So funny I’ve hated these so much forever. Then I saw the white spray paint makeover in an old Domino magazine and wished I had not made so many client trash theirs. Looks great in purple. I still do hate them in brass though….

Wow! I can’t believe you posted this… I have this ugly duckling STILL hanging in my living room, after moving in a year ago (I know!!!!). This was my wake up call this morning, I will go to the paint store TODAY!

The style of this ubiquitous brass chandelier is emulating Dutch “candle-liers” seen in some of the old masters paintings. See Vermeer’s painting…”The Painter (Vermeer’s Self-Portrait) and His Model as Klio”, for example.
There was a different style brass chandelier in my current house when I moved in and I took it down and spray painted it satin black and sold it on consignment!!!

What a fabulous idea – I’ve never liked those shiny brass chandeliers that you see in every builder’s home – such a ubiquitous eye sore. This version is much more appealing.

I actually love brass but it has to be good warm brass and those yellow numbers, definitely not an example of the good in this metal. What a fabulous transformation- I would never have thought of purple but it looks amazing-a big high five to Victoria!!
