Meet Di – The Creative & Witty Owner Of Ghost Furniture

Whether this is your design style or not, pay attention to what what my friend Di has to say. She is one smart and playful cookie. And what  a fun life she lives! Residing in a 300-year old country home and on a regular basis hopping into her van and driving from the UK (!) to Paris to scout products for her business.

Di Overton is a witty and creative UK based designer who always inspires me and makes me laugh out loud. Yes, the blog world brought us together about a year ago (she is behind DesignersBlock which is the leading eclectic style blog in the UK) but I am so looking forward to meeting her in person.

This week Di is launching Concrete Ghost in collaboration with the very talented Kathy Dalwood. Concrete Ghost is a business line which is part of Di’s successful company Ghost Furniture.

I am pleased to be the first in the US with an exclusive on this!

Di,  please describe your design style for us.

Eclectic, there’s so many good styles out there I suppose I couldn’t choose one so eclectic it is.
Where do you get your inspiration from?

Inspiration comes from everything around me. The strangest things can inspire it’s a hard thing to explain. On the Ghost Furniture website there is an inspirations page I put together to show people how some of my ideas came to fruition. I have even been inspired to create a table by passing one of the lions in Trafalgar Square. My advice to anyone searching for inspiration is LOOK UP and never have a closed mind.

(View from Di’s cottage. “Open your eyes, smell the roses”).

What prompted you to get started in the design world?

I have been designing since the late 1970s. I used to be a knitwear designer in the 1980s and had a very successful business selling high end designer knitwear then got dragged into the world of advertising and at that time created wheredidyoubuythat.com which I subsequently sold to Bodie and Fou. In 2006 my partner Harvey and I decided we had had enough and semi-retired to our cottage in the country and it seemed the perfect time to start designing again instead of selling other people’s designs. It’s in the blood I suppose.

Many of us know about your fabulous and oh-so witty blog. Tell us more about your company.

Ghost Furniture, so called because we are bringing things back from the dead, employs only two people – myself and my partner Harvey. He writes the website, helps with the design ideas (sometimes he stops me being too wacky) and more importantly carrying heavy stuff around for me. We do all the photography, copy writing, web optimization etc etc ourselves, the advantage of having been in advertising for so long.  As we decided to semi-retire we are determined to keep it personal.

Splendid Willow’s comment: This is why I love this girl! Look at her Marie Antoinette chair – and what inspired her.

How lovely and fun isn’t this tasseled bedside table!

And look at this framed spoon. How unexpected and playful!

Our youngest daughter Charlotte lives in Paris and we visit often and trawl the brocantes and flea markets there. She is our scout as she scours the Paris area for the best brocantes that will be held when we are visiting. The whole set up is perfect. We travel there with our van and come back loaded to the gunnels. We deliver most of the larger pieces to our customers as this gives us a chance to meet them and we get to see parts of the UK we may never have visited otherwise. A pretty perfect way to run a business I think.
So what new do you have cooking?  Please share with us!

Well this has been kept a deep dark secret for a long time
now but at last it can be revealed - Concrete Ghost. Late 2009 both Kathy Dalwood and myself discovered that we had both been admiring each other’s work from afar, as far as London, where Kathy lives, is from the wilds of Northumberland where I live. As you will already know Kathy creates fabulous concrete sculptures from flea market finds and I asked her to create something I could apply to my Ghost pieces.
As is the case in most collaborations things evolved and we have ended up with an amazing collection of sculpted tassels made from heavily detailed vintage originals finished with vintage mercier and passementerie from the alleyways of Paris. Some pieces have been applied to furniture some are stand alone pieces and we even created a range of curtain tie backs. We are both very excited about it as we know that no one has ever attempted such a collaboration. As Kathy cleverly puts it – “The raw quality of the monochrome concrete is an intriguing contrast to the luxurious colored cords and delicate trimmings”.

Splendid Willow’s comment: People, this  tassel is made of concrete! A sculpture!

These mini-sculptures, each individually cast by hand, are concrete casts of real silk tassels with all the intricate detail of the original.

Look at this free standing concrete tassel sculpture. Splendid!
What part of design really gets your heart racing?

The best part is applying the first coat of paint which is the start of the transformation. When I buy the pieces for Ghost they are deceased, as we say – bringing quality furniture back from the dead and making it hauntingly beautiful – I would never think of touching a piece that still has some life in it.

(Flea market find in the process of being transformed into something lovely and fun).

Do you have a signature design feature/technique or object?

My signature design feature is the truly matte finish of the paints I use. These paints are specially mixed for us in Paris. Applying them to the pieces is like applying fresh cream. If I told you the source I would have to kill you :) It has taken years to find the right mix and the right colors and I am in love with it, sad but true – Di Overton is in love with her paint.

Describe what you see as major design influences and trends right now? Do you even pay attention to them?

Never, never, never. It is the road to ruin. Imagine how much stuff I would be left with if I followed trends they are in and out like a fiddler’s elbow.

What’ your favorite design piece at home?  The one you’d take with you before all others.

Believe it or believe it not if I had a fire in my home and I could grab one item before I left it would be my Dustpan and Brush. I obtained this set when I owned wheredidyoubuythat.com, designed and made by Normann Copenhagen. Never does a crumb go under it and the brush goes into the tightest of corners. When we had our cottage extended the builders asked for a dustpan and brush and when I passed them this set they laughed but proceeded to use it for months and it survived their abuse. It’s washable, never warps and I just love it. Innovative design like this blows my mind.
What’s your favorite wall color?

Stone. If you want to add color put something colorful on it. It is so versatile and clashes with nothing. A close second is black which if used in the right way can be stunning. I have black walls in my kitchen but the cupboards are stone and bronze which puts the wall in the background and it also can carry any color placed on it.

Describe the house you fantasize living in. (Or are you already living in it?)

Monika, I am in it!  I visited some rich friends recently and was sitting in their orangery thinking how I could actually fit my cottage into it. We were looking out onto their huge garden and I thought – how the hell do they manage that. We used to live in a huge town house in the city so I’ve been there and done that and truly appreciate that fact but I look out every morning and evening and see a changing landscape that most people would give their eye teeth for. My cottage is over 300 years old maybe older and has a fascinating history and it works for me, I cannot ask for more.

Finally, what is on top of your design wish list?

Nothing! When I owned wheredidyoubuythat.com I had access to the best in design world and took advantage of it so without sounding smug I don’t really need anything else.

Thank you Dear Di! I so enjoy your company and your unique style!

I think that interior design at times can be boring and predictable. (Yes, really!). Your playfulness is such a relief! And so is Kathy’s! You both inspire me to add much more personal spunk and beauty to my own home!

My Favorite Way Of Relaxing x 2

Hello friends, I hope you all are enjoying your weekend! When my friend Ally (From The Right Bank) asked her readers to send one (1) image of a room that defines their style, I knew exactly which one to send. I am sorry, Ally dear (and to my many readers) that I keep on recycling this image. But if ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it! And the same goes for good design and interiors. I LOVE THIS ROOM because of:

Its classic style. (This room will work 10 years from now. Both the lines and the colors).
Its comfort. I am SOOO tired of rooms that only look good to the eye (Yawn!) but where the body and heart can’t relax.
The mix between old and new. Look at the ceiling and the contrast with the tall galvanized steel bookcases.
Its books! A home is not a home without books!
The lovely, non-contrived art display. (And I love that there is a small table lamp crammed into one of the cubby shelves!).
The natural light.

I can also imagine this room in the evening with some beautiful lighting. I would have no problem dragging a cocktail table in here and catering to some happy guests!

Speaking of relaxing, I will take next week off and just focus on relaxing and enjoying the first week of summer with my happy and funny kids!

Oh, and we are pretty excited about our latest family member. Let me present to you this fluffy, sweet little four-legged friend. We all love her! She is already a very spoiled hamster!

I will be back in a few days – more blog alert and with a big smile on my face!

And to all wonderful and generous fathers out there (see my earlier post)Happy Father’s day!

Welcome To My Summer Party – Swedish Style

The very lovely & creative Catherine over at the The Shiny Pebble is throwing a block party today, inviting bloggers to share their ideas and scenes for the perfect party. And here is my little contribution.

Remember this house?  I wrote about it earlier in the week.

Well, I am pretty convinced that my friend Pernilla and her husband will soon be the lucky owners of this lovely (or something very similar) vacation home in Sweden. And I am going to help them throw a fun party! Since Sweden hardly gets an ounce of darkness in the summer, the party will kick-off in the afternoon and go into a warm summer night. So welcome to our:

Dress code: It makes me feel like dancing!

In order to have the perfect touches I am bringing my dear blog friend Erin, from Dandelion & Grey, with me! Erin’s  fabulous blog is focusing primarily on weddings. If I was getting married tomorrow, Erin would be the only wedding planner that I would engage and trust with my my big affair!

A fresh Swedish summer drink is awaiting all the guests.

Of course, we will be dining Al Fresco – under the old, giant oak tree. It is summer!

The guests will enjoy a lovely and generous buffet filled with really creative and tasty food. A mix of Swedish and international dishes. (Here are just a few examples).

In addition to the buffet table we will have three separate food-drink stations. Station no. 1 is all about Beverages.

How clever is this set up with wine barrels and a wooden plank! (Admit that you will copy this idea!)

Yes, homemade Swedish schnapps is a given on the drink table!

Station no. 2 is set up beautifully for International Cheeses. Please, I would hang out here all evening long!

And station no. 3 is all about Splendid Desserts! (Yes, you would  find me lurking here as well!).

When the happy guests are ready to digest all the lovely food they can wander inside and learn more about all the people invited. (All guests were asked in advance to bring 3 photos to hang in the photo garland).

Boule is set up in one shady part of the garden on a well raked path. And the dart board is also inviting guests for some social play & fun!

When the darkness slowly decends upon us, we will light candles in simple mason jars.

Good music and dancing will be an important part of the program. A local, fun jazz quartet will entertain the guests along with a great DJ.

And my only personal song request is “Live Tomorrow” by Swedish Laleh. It is a long time favorite of mine!

Turn on your speakers and take a listen (to the whole song!).

At 2 am, it is starting to get light again. A new, lovely summer day is awaiting us. You can start to hear tweets from song birds and despite the late hour, none of the guests has left! It is one of those rare feel good parties, nobody wants to depart from.

We all need memories like these when winter is hugging us with its cold embrace.

I hope you enjoyed the summer fun and that you perhaps found some inspiration for a party of your own. And Catherine thank you for inviting us all along! What a fun way to kick off the summer!

A Swedish Home & Dreams Via Seattle

I am surrounded by many great friends and friends of friends with lovely homes. It is about time that I start sharing how some of them live! They are not professional designers (although they could be if they wanted to!), they are just ordinary people like most of us, with a strong passion for design and an excellent eye for creating wonderful and personal homes. Nothing is pretend, nothing is staged. This is the real deal.

Meet my close & wonderful friend Pernilla! Every time we get together, we forget about everything else and just chat about design for hours non-stop. We are equally passionate design nerds! (And my little William and Pernilla’s little Klara are close friends and destined to end up as a married couple some 30 years from now – we Moms have decided!).

Pernilla is from Sweden and this girl lives it too! Lots of white and many classic Scandinavian design pieces. Like many Swedes her great style is simple and fresh.

Her wonderful & handy (!) husband just made this long dining table to go with their Danish Waegner chairs. I think it turned out fantastic!

Pernilla loves mixing white and black with added pops of color.

No home is Swedish without a classic, gray sheep skin.

Pernilla and her husband are seriously contemplating buying a second home in Sweden. A lovely vacation spot to call home from home. And this is what they are swooning over right now. (Hold on to your hats!).

When Pernilla just recently discovered this place she immediately interrupted her husband’s business meeting just so he could start putting the energy out there for this house! I would interrupt my husband too! What a house for relaxing days and easy living!

The house is situated in the southern parts of Sweden (Skåne).

What a great mix of old and new. And what a light and airy home. Stunning in my book.

This house has Pernilla’s name all over it. I can so see her in it! And I can so see myself visiting – often, often! In fact, I might be that horror guest that just keeps on extending and extending my stay!

Happy new week to you all! Let it be a good one!

Great Gifts For Father’s Day

June 20th. Just around the corner! That is the day when we celebrate Father’s day here in the US.

I have only great memories of my own father, who passed away way too early (when I was 14 years old). In my heart I remember him as a very hard working,  intelligent,  generous and family oriented person with a good sense of humor and an always positive attitude. My parents were immigrants and were clearly very different than the parents in the ritzy part of Stockholm where I grew up. Growing up I always felt like an outsider. But maybe that is exactly what I needed to become strong and independent and to learn to not be afraid of things or people who are different.

Much later in life I found my soul mate – the love of my life. And as no surprise to myself  – he is very much like my own father! So, the goodness continues.

A couple of years ago - on Father’s day – I started placing a framed photo of my father on the kitchen table next to some beautiful flowers. And I told my children about their Grandfather. This year I will do the same with Peter’s father who passed away 12 years ago and who I never had the opportunity to meet and love. It is about time that they meet! I know that our fathers would have gotten a long wonderfully. They are probably talking about us now!

We only do little things on Father’s day at our house. But we do make sure that family quality time with Dad (the best on the planet – I insist!) gets highest priority. A good brunch is a given, small handmade gifts and cards from the kids and a small little gift from me. I have not made up my mind yet but here are some good gift candidates:

1) A membership to a local wine tasting class. (Hey, I would only benefit from that!)

2. A good quality key holder or wallet. Something that only looks better overtime. (Yes, go ahead. You may call me a snob when it comes to small leather goods!)

Key holder: Tod’s via Neiman Marcus

Wallet: Ferragamo

3. A backyard hammock. (It would quickly turn into everybody else’s favorite spot!). This one from LL Bean.

4. Electric salt & pepper mills. (My husband is so good with the pots & pans!). Via Williams-Sonoma.

5. Monogrammed BBQ tools (hey, why not!). Via Williams-Sonoma.

6. A Thermometer fork. Via Williams-Sonoma.

7. Stieg Larsson’s best selling books.  My Swedish contribution!

Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) was a Swedish writer and journalist. Prior to his sudden death of a heart attack in November 2004 he finished three detective novels in his trilogy “The Millenium-series” which were published posthumously; The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest”.

Altogether, his trilogy has sold more than 20 million copies in 41 countries (spring of 2010), and he was the second bestselling author in the world 2008. Also, if you have a chance see the movie – the Swedish, original one. It is fantastic!

Anything good you have up the sleeve and would like to share? Don’t be shy now! We are all looking for great gift ideas!
